A relic found tidying through my grandads belongings. Considering framing it, what do we think?

Image
PressF1ToContinue

Top right says reprint. Reprinted when I wonder?

Image
PlentifulCoast

It would be all yellowed if it was an original paper, right? It looks in too good of shape.

Image
ogodilovejudyalvarez

It even has the

Image
SirGaylordSteambath

So what the fuck actually happened there? That was confusing to read. He at the very least committed manslaughter yet there's no mention and very little punishment. The whole thing is fishy af

Image
Konami_Killer

The only reason I know what that is is because of Seinfeld lmao

Image
alabasterwilliams

It's a reprint that looks like it could have been from the 50th anniversary, just a couple years ago. It isn't nearly as aged as it would be if it were from 1969, and that crease would be nearly impossible to unfold if it were 52 years old.

Reach_for_the_Moon21

I do see that now actually however I can unfortunately confirm this won’t have been a recent reprint. Perhaps an earlier anniversary but still holds the sentiment to us :)

Image
SunSaffron

I'd get it professionally framed to preserve it the best possible

Image
sirius5715

Yup. Acid-free & UV protection are key.

Image
DOGEweiner

Unfortunately, this is a reprint :( I wouldn't spend TOO much money on preservation. Still super cool though!

Image
leafdam

It's really interesting because a) it shows the British reporting on the 1st moon landing and b) all the other stories give it such colour and context. Don't crop it.

Image
joecarter93

Do it, then when you walk by it, you can say, “Huh?! No Way! We landed on the moon!”

Image
JPSofCA

It's a London paper, to which can be said "Huh?! What they call astronauts, we call lunarnauts."

Image
vava777

I agree. The world may have forgotten Mr.Robeson's contribution to show-jumping but we will never forget, right?

Image
sweetcheeksanta

It is a reprint, newspapers are mass produced, and newspaper itself does not last.

Image
13beers

It's a reprint from the early 80's not an original. Very little value in reprints, I would keep it, but wouldn't spend money on preserving it.

Image
ribeye256

Haha! This just brought back a scene for me from the movie Dumb and Dumber when Loyd looks at the framed newspaper and goes "Hey everyone! We landed on the moon!" Time to go into the archives and rewatch!

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Hahah yes dig it out!

Image
everydayimrusslin

I found something similar before. It was an old copy of the Cork Examiner (Ireland) and the headline was 'Way paved for moon landing' on the front page. I think something about the Kray twins being up in court too. Cool find. Any odd ads on the inside? As far as I remember there was loads of ad for 'Burke's animal removals' in mine!

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Brilliant! It follows on with some very questionable real estate adverts for Jones lang Wootton, ‘Jimmy’s (we will shift it) excavators’ and that years chaotic cyclone in India. All makes for an interesting read! 😂

Image
_craq_

I don't understand how there are that many other stories on the front page. How does an editor decide that the resignation of the head of showjumping deserves any column inches at all compared to landing on the moon??

Image
dontknowhowtoprogram

the reason is we did not have 24 hour news like today so the paper crammed as much as they could into one paper.

Image
philman132

It still happens even in papers today. Some events are world altering, such as landing on the moon, but they often share headlines with scandals that are huge news at the time, but are ultimately inconsequential and everyone forgets a year later.

Image
_pigpen_

It’s a little known fact, but the British moonshot program at that time was based on training horses to jump to the moon. Hence the front page status of this news.

Image
sweller3

I was thinking the headline's small point-size an example of British understatement, but they must have gone to print before Armstrong took his 'small step', so they didn't have a photo yet. Perhaps their next edition was suitably emphatic!

Image
Real_Affect39

I found one a few months ago marking the success of STS-1

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Ooh nice what year was this published? Early 80’s?

Image
JonathanCRH

Well, we all remember where we were when we heard that Peter Robeson had resigned, don’t we?

‘Holy living fuck’ 🤣🤣

GolgaGrimnaar

Came here for this... not disappointed.

Image

Incredible seeing the juxtaposition of John Kennedy's moon landing goal achievement along side his brother Edward Kennedy's drunken manslaughter of Mary Jo Kopechne. I had forgotten they occurred during the same time period.

Image
Woeful

Poor Collins...so important but so little recognition...

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Unsung hero!

Image
Vault69Survivor

Maybe get some uv filtering film for the glass too. Protect it from the sunlight.

What do WE think Reddit hivemind? Lmao made me laugh

Image
jackasstacular

Who cares what *we* think; if you find it meaningful or just a cool piece of history then I'd say go for it.

Image
warrends

I collect comic books. You can get comics pressed, which as it sounds removes (when done correctly) most of the wrinkles and such, and they can be cleaned as well to remove some stains.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

That’s so cool! Yeah I’ll try and hit up a local picture framer I know he’s bound to have seen something like this before and I’ll mention the glass/treatments mentioned!

Image
UseYourDamnHead

Great idea, but get it professionally done.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Hey that’s still so cool you framed a piece of history like that!

Image
puupi

I'm more interested in the "Show jumping chief resigns" and "Egyptian air duel victory" stories.

Image
FIZZY_BOT

I found two news papers in a trunk of my great grandmother which are about eagle leaving the moon and of Alan Shepard’s first visit to space. They seam very much original but I could still careful go though the pages. Photos:

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

No way they look ace!! What a find

Image
ghostdog688

Absolutely! But first, scan every page. So many news stories get buried by the major events of the day, the more mundane ones can be very interesting to historians to see what society was worrying about or was interested in.

Image
EcceFelix

Check following pages for Ted Kennedy and Chappaquiddick.

Image
kaptain_kangarooo

It'll hold its value a lot better than "Billionaire spends 3 minutes in the upper atmosphere for no scientific benefit"

Image
bevdob2

Frame in a deep frame. Keep the whole paper that way.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

I like that idea!!

Omg yes, hang it up!!!eagles touch down!!!a game for the ages

Image
ohnowheredmypantsgo

I still have the original newspaper form September 12, 2001

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

A rather harrowing news article, sad but a historic day for sure!

Image
AnglinImagePhoto

“ No way? We landed on the moon!”

Image
krispykremey55

You grandad would likely be very happy to know you framed it. Awesome find.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

I think so too! He was always amazed by space and science in general which is probably where I got/get my inspiration :)

Image
-WilliamMButtlicker_

I got mine professionally framed, it looks awesome. I can post it if you want an idea of how it might look

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Hey Will that’d be great actually just to get a perspective of it!

Image
totally_anomalous

Have it propetly framed in acid-free materials to preserve it for future generations. Newsprint gets incredibly brittle and yellow.

Image
mattaw2001

You have to de-acidify it or it will brown and crumble to bits, even in a frame!

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Thanks Matt appreciate it!

Image
QBanklerMusic

Considering??

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

😂😂 on it!

Image
noshoes77

Totally frame it, even if is a reprint (maybe a second edition?).

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

I still think that’s cool either way and makes a great addition to any wall in my opinion!

Image
soggybutter

Oh shit I actually have one of these as well. An original, not a reprint. I need to get it preserved.....

Image
Followlost

It’s not the most iconic or eye catching and it’s in less than perfect shape, so to frame the entire page as one typically would, might end up looking foolish. It would however look cool if you were to give it a more abstract treatment. Perhaps only framing a section of it or adding some colour.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Yes I’m totally with you on that one! Maybe crop it down and preserve it as both a memento to that big day and the old man himself.

Image
mwaldman0607

Do it and pass that down as an heirloom. Will be worth tons of money the way memorabilia prices have increased

Image
Raspberry-Famous

Enough people saved their local papers that this sort of memorabilia is probably never going to be worth a huge amount of money.

Image
AlmanacPony

"Americans First on the Moon" Wow... the innacuracy and the egotism.

Image
Vathor

Exactly. It should say first AND only.

Image
Brother_Anarchy

Depends on whether you like it enough to have it framed.

Image
Dice_to_see_you

Make sure the mounts are acid free and the glass is uv protectant. Theres a glass now called archival or museum glass that actually is quite matte but amazing protection according to the demo at michaels. Very cool bit of history you got there

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

I’ll certainly look into both of those thanks for the advice there friend! Will get it posted back here to show the final product :)

Image
GyaradosDance

Get two frames. One for this paper, and a second when the first humans land on Mars.

Image
XNormal

The part about “breathing again” was from mission control, not Armstrong.

Image
Kitchen_Wrong

Can you say man cave! And it would be honoring him! Frame it! If you don’t you will regret it possibly!

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

I think it’d be a shame if I didn’t!

Image
silverback_79

Poor Pete Robeson. Show jumping was never the same again.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Can’t honestly say I don’t get emotional when both Pete Robeson and show jumping are mentioned in the same sentence nowadays.

Image
BladeRunnerTHX

It appears to be a REPRINT. Do you own birds?

Hey we don’t leave mighty Mike Collins out on this subreddit 😉

Image
hysterical_landmark

Nice! Good idea! I have the SF Chronicle version of this framed and hanging on my wall!

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

That’s so cool! I already have the earth rise picture framed so it’ll go great alongside that :)

Image
hahayourface

Not going to lie here . I've found hundreds of these thrown out by a dumpster beside a thrift store.

Image
josehm84

What is a "tio pepe"? I ask because my family calls me pepe, and some of my nieces call me tio pepe.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Im assuming it’s a type of Sherry which is like a fortified wine. Not a terrible name to be called for sure! I’ve had worse 😂

Image
TheRichTurner

I have an original copy of the Daily Telegraph for that date. It's more yellowed than this one, but it may have had more exposure to

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

That’s so cool did you ever think to frame it or keep it up somewhere? ‘I am a grandad’ lol!

Image
buff_susan_lol

Good days when Egypt wasn’t sucking Israel’s cock

Image
neihuffda

Nah, don't frame it, just throw it away.

Image
Reach_for_the_Moon21

Had me in the first half there! 🤣
