Legal weed in North Carolina? New bills give state lawmakers multiple options

Image

I love the idea of some enterprising farmers creating a bunch of new NC strains. I nominate Venus Mind Trap for a particularly heady strain.

Killer sativa that would be

Farmers have the best weed.

Image

Some of the best underground strains have already been produced from the western part of the state for years. There is a Blue Ridge strain for example.

To the optimistic folks, Allow me to introduce you to our state legislators. I don’t believe you’ve met.

If weed is ever legalized in NC, I am predicting less than 24 hours before the first picture of someone smoking a joint on Boylan Bridge is posted here.

Shit I’ll do it now.

Image
Punchaguywithglasses

The important part is to give folks the ability to grow. We can legalize all day, but in the end we have to stop making it profitable for criminals.

Image
ChickenTenderDinner

If you can’t grow it at home it isn’t legal imo.

Image
gt-

I would prefer the ability for self-growing and self-use rather than legalization of distribution, if there were ever a situation where it was one or the other.

Image
NancyGracesTesticles

That solves a problem, though. The GOP needs to run on scary criminals, so they'll never agree to it.

Image
SauceOfTheBoss

You can call my dealer criminal, but he supports his mother. Most of the profits goes to her dialysis machine.

EXACTLY THIS

Image
IfHeDiesHeDiesHeDied

Criminals? Like who? I hope you’re speaking about those cocksucker politicians on both sides of the aisle when you use that word.

Image
scorpionattitude

They’re only criminals because it’s illegal. I’m sure a lot of them would’ve loved to start a headshop. Since it’s illegal they can’t. Some of y’all out here acting like these “criminals” that sell some weed are equivalent to the criminals that traffic people as well as a plethora of drugs. There’s plenty of dumb shit in this state that’s still illegal. I’m hoping it’s general legalization because I’ve got a green thumb and would love to plant some at my dad’s. Why go out of the way to punish a dealer, I don’t understand that...it’s some peoples living.

From a quick read of the Medical bill - #669 - I didn't see anything about a registry or about qualifying conditions? Just a Dr's note either to buy or to use if found in possesion?

Image

Don't forget that it will disqualify you from owning a firearm.

The only dx I’ve even heard were epilepsy and cronhs mentioned this morning on WRAL. I’d hope they’d end up adding more dx.

I currently use Cannabis to help ease my Chronic Pain & Muscle Spasms. I am on full SSA Disability and my pain is increasing little by little. My spine is deteriorating and I have an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm that will need surgery.

You need dabs

Image
Raebandz

I'm so sorry you're dealing with that! Try Delta 8. It is completely legal, sold in every smoke shop around here, and has the same effects as weed, as it's just an isomer of the traditional delta-9 THC. Cheaper too.

Image
Hot_Dog_Cobbler

I'll believe it when I see it. I don't expect it until after 2024, when Virginia's recreational goes live.

Image
hobbsarelie83

They changed it to this spring

Image
AnnieAnnieSheltoe

The vast majority of North Carolinians support at least medical legalization (I think in 2017 it was 80%). I wrote to every member of the general assembly about it a few years ago. Every single republican that replied said there wasn’t enough research on its safety, which is obviously untrue.

Image
Thissiteisdogshit

I bet you every single one of those Republicans drinks alcohol.

Image
oceanrescue31

Love it but NC will be one of the last states to legalize

Image
justic3bon3r

Add a special clause that Mary Ann Baldwin is excluded from having any.

Image
RoseareFree23

I mean with the people that are moving to NC in droves (and I would imagine generally more liberal leaning folks, anecdotally), we might be able to move this along faster. I’m not super optimistic but at least there’s Va sooner rather than later

Image
PinHead_Tom

Oh that’s a solid point. Never thought of that.

Image
lilmeexy

Here's what NORML is doing in the state. Please check it out and use the resources there to either call your representatives directly or send emails!

Image
micklemasthe2nd

Unfortunately, I think we'll be one of the last states to legalize. Slighty before Missouri, West V, and the other shit bucket states.

Image
poop-dolla

Shit bucket states like Missouri and West Virginia are already ahead of us. They’ve both legalized medical marijuana.

Image
progmetalfan

I don’t get the point of these posts..every month someone will sponsor a bill and almost everytime it gets axed before it can even be considered on the floor..unless we remove those old GOP farts from raleigh, we aren’t gonna have legal weed. If you feel hopeful about it with the current state legislature, you can keep hoping forever.

Image
justic3bon3r

If we can uncover something as big as Cuomo’s recent fumbles in our own executive branch, maybe we could gain an edge in this race.

Q: Doesn't pot smoking have many of the same problems as cigarette smoking -- cancer and so on? It's not like there's a filter on these things.

Image
Workaloptetron

Short answer is maybe, but it's no where near as definitive as smoking tobacco. There are also additives to cigarettes that increase the risk. Also, you could use a filter if you want! No law against that. And if you're worried, there is always vaping and edibles.

Image
Varnsworth

Sure smoking anything isn't good for you but (most) people are not smoking a pack of joints a day. Plus as someone else added, edibles are a thing.

Image
janesearljones

You’re lighting something on fire and breathing it in... there’s no possible way it can be good for you. Better or worse? Better than all the crap in tobacco but don’t think it’s good for you.

Image
lilmeexy

Those are reasonable questions. It depends on the method of delivery and even then it is unclear. Some studies show little link to cancer, but more research should probably be done on various methods of delivery. Each delivery method has its upsides and downsides. If you eat edibles I would imagine it is less harmful for lungs than combusted smoke (and blunts/spliffs might be especially harmful). On the other hand some people get too high after ingesting additional edible doses before the effects kick in. This has been an issue for states that legalize and inexperienced users are sent to ERs (this does cost taxpayer money). The solution was to reduce the max THC dosage per edible and make each individual item uniform in size and dosage in packaging. Bongs take smoke through water, so that method might be less harmful than a pipe, which may produce more smoke from resin.. it depends on how you consume it. Vaporizing is a whole other thing too and the CDC hypothesizes that

Image
kendraro

No. Cannabis and tobacco smoke are not the same. Cannabis has anti inflammatory qualities that make it less harmful. Here is more info

I don't smoke or use cannabis at all, but strongly support legalization. It isn't worse than Alcohol, and criminalizing it is a waste of resources on our prisons and justice system, not to mention the positive economic benefits of legalization.

I’ve been considering moving from Seattle to Raleigh to be closer to family, and lack of legal weed has made this daily smoker hesitant... this could change everything!

FYI, it’ll probably take another 5-10 years. At least.

Same. I’m in Tacoma and miss home so badly but fuck I would hate not being able to drive to the dispensary.
