Two-Thirds of iPhone Users Expected to Block Ad Tracking

Image
Coldpocketz

So I should start seeing less stalker-like, personalized ads?

Image
SlimSandy

Get ready for weight loss and vitamin ads now.

Image
calmwhiteguy

Now you'll see the same volume of ads but for products or services you would never want or find useful

Image
TooLateForTacos

Plus it really wears away at your soul. Eating the same food, living in the same space, doing the same thing, every, single, day.

Image
Niightstalker

Ay

Image
Buzstringer

Sort of, it will still be related to the page you are viewing, it just won't follow you about like a bad hangover.

Image
ThePrussianGrippe

I bought a nice little vault for valuables from a store. At no point did I say the name of the product. I paid in cash. No one in the store made mention of the name or brand. So I KNOW the microphone didn’t pick anything up. The store I bought it from primarily sells things that aren’t this product, it just happened to have some in stock.

Image
tryitout91

Go to

Image

Facebook is still gonna listen in on your convos if you leave microphone access on.

Image

Funny, but my ad blocker blocked the link in the post.

Image
penny_feral

god i love anything that fucks with facebook

Image
goahnary

This won’t fuck with Facebook as much as everyone else. They can still track your behavior on their platform which is even more valuable now that people have less ways of being tracked. Of course you could not use Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Image
Mastagon

I’m doing my part

Image
RoomIn8

You're gonna love my ex.

Image

Prediction: “You are missing out on some search results. To get the full Facebook/Instagram/SnapChat/Google experience, please select “Allow Tracking”.”

Image
VitiateKorriban

Im working with Facebook ads for recruiting purposes and for us, almost nothing changes.

Image
markycrummett

The pop ups are quite amusing “this is an integral part of the app and allows us to offer you better ads” 😂

Image
South_Pole_Santa

Which sadly is kinda true, the integral part of the app at least. I’m a software developer at a mobile game company and we had to put a lot of focus on getting that pop up right since ads are our entire business model essentially (We don’t have any IAPs except for the option to turn off ads).

Image
stuntobor

Wait that's an option? I'm in. So that brings it up to ... like ...

Image
__XOXO__

two thirds plus 1

It’s in the iOS 14.5 update that came out last night.

Image
Webborwebbor

As a small business owner, this is not great (before downvoting, please read on). Facebooks algorithm that started being implemented right after the Instagram chronological timeline was switched to what it is today makes it almost impossible to be seen by new users without paying for ads. Its now pay to play and it costs an arm and a leg to advertise on their platforms. Small ecomm businesses have to rely on the ad tracking - Facebook forced it onto small businesses.

Image
JohnBoyAndBilly

It's interesting, this is an attempt to fuck with small businesses. Go oligarchy!

Image
stevenmbe

This is a great development, even more for those disgusted with what Facebook does.

Image
[deleted]

Facebook has shadow profiles on people who have never used a single Facebook service. All it takes is sucking up some Facebook users contact list because they don't know better

Image
Burpr0stich

I haven’t gotten a pop up yet asking to track, is there something I need to turn on in settings?

Image
jathanism

What this overlooks is the fact that most many people when asked would rather pay for a private, ad-free experience on Facebook. Facebook has rejected this model because they would rather monetize unethically and against the will of consumers under the guise of "providing free services". You know and I know and we all know that the price of selling your privacy for likes is actually a very high cost.

Image
JunkiesAndWhores

Facebook allows advertisers to target children interested in smoking, alcohol and weight loss

Image
sheepsense

"If opt-out rates are high and IDFAs become scarce, app developers and publishers are expecting revenues to be hit in the short term."

Image
mr_ji

How about just giving people a setting to turn off all ad tracking?

Image
Equantium

Glad that Apple finally gave us the option to opt out. Let the companies like Facebook pay people a share of the revenue to opt in and then they might have more people be OK with being the product!

Image
mts89

I swear I've had the blanket option to opt out of all tracking for years on my iPhone.

Image
Yasirbare

Thank You Apple for "giving" us the possibility. But mostly thank you to the politicians demanding privacy in Europe and not allowing selling phones with targeted apps and demand the right to privacy. And thank you Apple for the new papers we can buy with the new targeting data you can provide on those opting out, we need that in our comparison with how the same people react on android. Next thing is to find the pattern where we lie to everyone and earn double. I do not trust these guys one minute.

Image
sat-soomer-dik

You're aware this is also a ploy by Apple to force developers to their will, and they will sell subscription services via their app store which Apple take 30% on. Also Apple still tracks you and uses that data to make money.

Image
CapybaraWarrior

So happy that Apple is moving in this direction and going against basically all the other major tech players in protecting our privacy and choice. They really made me a loyal customer with this approach.

Image
TrashbatLondon

Or they’re cynically squeezing out third parties so they can be proprietors and beneficiaries of that data.

Image
CO_PC_Parts

Apple doesn't give two shits about your privacy or choices. They're just forcing a shift in data collection techniques into their hands instead of google/fb. Google is also working on a version of this that I think will give them even more control over android devices.

Image

Image
lightningsnail

This feature has existed on Android since at least 2016 but okay.

Image
stacker55

wait so purposefully bricking old phones to force upgrades was ok but sending you targeted ads isnt?

Image
Head_Perspective_783

This is a hugely anti-competitive move and in the future you might not have a choice to leave Apple

Image
Kevycito

Yeah, Apple is doing this so they can create their own ad ecosystem. They’re already doing it in the App Store, allowing apps to advertise above all other searches.

Image
Steezycheesy

The irony of the whole thing is Apple is still tracking you even if you opt out.

Image
24nicebeans

AND this updates lets me open my phone with a mask on? Hold on, getting off Reddit to update ASAP

Image
mikepictor

Yes...and it WORKS (but you need an Apple Watch)

Image
chromiumlol

It lets anybody unlock your phone with a mask on, as long as they're close to you and your watch is unlocked. Apple has done a poor job explaining this, if they have at all (probably purposefully).

Image
StarshipMan

I might get an iphone because of this.

Image
user899121

I'm sort of thinking the same thing. I have a lot of respect for apple on this topic, Google on the other hand wouldnt dare move in this direction. They are probably the biggest offender aside from Facebook.

Image
tragicdiffidence12

That was the reason I switched. Over time, I’ve come to accept less customisability for a device that is more private (than a google OS device anyway), lasts for longer (my android phones turned into lag hell in about 18 months of purchase), and just works relatively flawlessly.

Image
The_ranting_spider

As someone who switched from Android.... watch out for the accessories, that is where they get you.

Image
Dinklebop

You can adblock on a droid too.

Image
MarcoMontana

Then the Advertisers need to give the user something for the revenue... You want to spam me with ads watch my habits then I want 25 cents from every ad you send me!

Image

[удалено]

Image
topasaurus

I think:

Image
-Dargs

25 cents per ad? Bruh advertisers pay like 0.00025 to serve that ad lol. It's scale that matters. I get your sentiment though.

Image
brockharvey

I am actually working on an ad network that will work towards mutually beneficial partnerships instead of data selling.

Image
calmwhiteguy

We do. We used to try and only advertise things to people who may actually benefit or at least have interest in the goods or services advertised. Now you'll still get the same volume of ads but never see anything that makes sense for you again.

Image
foggy-sunrise

It's almost like we're all secretly slaves.

Image
ZookyTheClown

I also hate how companies try to influence your decision to accept all cookies with darker choice boxes, ambiguously worded choices next to check marks, etc. sad to say but that needs to be regulated too.

Image
Archangel1313

This one feature alone, will probably make me buy an iPhone next.

Image
VacuousWording

Each and every damaging hit to spammers (all advertisement is spam) is good.

Image
boomstickah

Have we reached peak ad? For so long now it's been speculated that ad funded everything was a bubble. Perhaps we'll have to start paying for stuff.

Image
sunset117

This is great. The ads are legit creepy as fuck and targets my whole household

Image
[deleted]

Yassssss. Next step: ending ads. Go Apple go.

Image
April_Fabb

Just like there’s a weekly report on how many hrs I’ve used my iOS devices, I’d like to get a weekly/monthly report with a list of all companies who track me — including suggestions for counter measures.

Image
SugarPinkWhore

i updated to the new ios but i literally did not get any tracking options to turn off or on??

Image
zippy72

It's in settings. Go into "privacy" and it's the second option down. If you turn it off completely it's an automatic "no" for any app that asks.

Image
ghost_n_the_shell

I’m going to opt out so extremely fucking hard that red bull is gonna sponsor me.

Image
Mr_Lumbergh

I already ran the update to 14.5 just for this feature.

Image
deanolavorto

Make that 2/3 and 1.

Image
sadman4332

How do I turn this feature on? I already updated to iOS 14.5.

Image
CedTruz

Yea it’s not very user friendly. All the news I heard about this made a huge deal about Facebook and Google being upset about this. As far as I can tell, nothing changed. So I went to the tracking settings and all it says is allow apps to ask you to track. The default is no. I assumed I had to turn that on in order to make this work by way of them asking and I say yes or no. Well again, nothing changed. Apparently if you leave it off by default it will say “no” when the apps ask. But how do we know they are asking?? As far as I can tell this is just a marketing ploy to get users to think Apple os taking privacy seriously.

Image
21-4-14

Good. Google, Facebook, and Reddit can suck it.

Image
Mr_Santa_Klaus

Good. Let's kill facebook once and for all.

Image
dreadpiratesleepy

I like how it’s stated as if that’s surprising or detrimental haha

Image
Mithra9

iPhone users:

Image
3v0_0fficial

Wow. Its as if we don't want to be tracked and have a right not to be. The moment we can ban advertisers from tracking us and our data, the better our world will be. The fact that we have many companies willing to pay for our social media information to advertise to us and manipulate us is disgusting imo. Being advertised to should be a choice. If I can have a no solicitation sign on my door, why can't I have one for my social media?

Image
StratosAlpha

Thanks Apple <3

Image
ImStillaPrick

I mean if they offered you something other than use of the site for allowing it then I bet many would change their mind. Points to redeem free stuff or discounts. Profit share that shit give me a small percentage of the price you sold my data for then maybe I’d let you.

Image
zippy72

That's one of the ideas behind the Brave browser

Image
bikejackass

Yet another reason why I’m glad I have iOS devices, they take my security and privacy seriously, rather than marketing me

Image
benny-the-rennie

The other third likes paying for credit card companies and banks to pass the costs of ID theft on to us. If you don't block trackers you are begging for your cc numbers to be stolen. Did you think for a second those unauthorized purchases were 'forgiven' by Visa? HAHAHAHA you sweet summer child. Visa just jacks up fees to merchants to cover those. They don't even give a shit how much is stolen by hackers, they just pass the costs down in fees, and merchants raise their prices to all of us accordingly. I don't want to pay for your hacked credit card, so block the trackers FFS

Image
DonkeyShowDiscoTech

If apple can really do this I will buy an iPhone for the first time. I've never owned an apple product but this is what will get me to turn.

Image
LandSquid399

There’s no “if” about it anymore, it is already happening ;)

Image
ErionFish

What convinced me to get one was when they added the little green dot above the signal icon if your camera is on, and orange for microphone.

Image
Ipis192168

ITT people who don't understand the different between ad blocking and ad TRACKER blocking.

Image
EIijah

Yeah they're all still going to get blasted with ads.. Although I can see some appeal in not getting targetted ads

Image
Corn_Salad_Vincenzo

Good thing I moved to iPhone.

Image
KennKennyKenKen

Can you imagine if Facebook and Instagram just leave apple lmfao

Image
DavidisLaughing

I’m okay with that. See ya later.

Image
ImSoConfuzeded

That’s it? I figured it would be more

Image
MyBigRed

The other third don't understand what that means.

Image
userse31

“Ask not to track”? How about: “Deny tracking”

Image
ChemicalDaniel

Apparently they legally cannot say “Deny tracking” because they cannot assure that ALL tracking will be stopped. Only app-to-app tracking using your iPhone’s ID number will be blocked, and even that can be bypassed once you build a userbase big enough.

Image
scienceguy8

Updated a couple days ago and disabled ad tracking immediately after.

Image
Drawman101

Why enable?

Image
MLV07

Updated iOS and blocked everything I could yesterday. My pihole already does all the heavy lifting on my network though, blocking ads, tracking, malicious websites, etc.

Image
nomnomdiamond

Now it's Googles move... never mind forgot they are an advertisement company.

Image
Igoos99

2/3rds seems like a low estimate.

Image
hermeb78

Downloading the update now. lol blocking everything I can

Image
Oistyer

Rookie numbers, everyone should.

Image
Corky_Butcher

We're about to see an evolution in ad tech.

Image
tigermarci

Wow, that’s awesome!

Image
denzelfrothington

When can we expect this feature to be available like they displayed it in the ad?

Image
realblush

Pretty shocked that 1/3rd would actively choose to be ad tracked.

Image
CL_Wrectangle

Who is the person who WANTS to be tracked by ads?

Image
motor-vader

Two-thirds of iPhone users will read the alert and chose to block ad targeting… FTFY

Image
free_stoppage

2/3rds seems low I’m sure it will јump when more and more apps are revealed to be tracking with out permissions

Image
SibilantShibboleth

Not an iPhone user but my android is getting creeping af too. Heard a remix on a roblox game on my xbox, next day is suggested by Spotify. Watching a YouTube video about some obscure fruit or celebrity, gf goes to ask Google a question and Google autocompletes it. It's point thing to track data users have entered into their phones, but tracking across apps and devices and straight up just listening all the time makes me want to go buy a flip phone.

Image
wilbamate

Yes, talk to your older friends and family. Offer your assistance. Fuck Facebook 👏👩‍🦳

Image
TheBitMan775

I’m gonna give a dirty look to the extra third.

Image
MR_Se7en

Apps will just start requiring access before the users can see content.

Image
[deleted]

It’s about damn time. Thanks, Apple.

Image
digitalibex

If companies want my data, there should be a way to opt-in; however I want to be paid for it.

Image
auldinia

It is the default. You have to opp in.

Image
mikepictor

The default is to be given a choice, but that choice has no inherent default on it.

Image
ajb9292

Two-thirds will block ad tracking and one-third won’t know what ad tracking is and will just allow it. Pretty sure not a single person wants ad tracking on if they actually know what it is and how it’s being used.

Image
StumptownRetro

The only thing that sucks is that this doesn’t auto apply to existing apps on your phone. So you have to manually change settings for every single one.

Image
Niightstalker

There is a switch in the settings called: „Allow Apps to request tracking“ if you turn that off Apps are not even allowed to ask and you don’t need to do it for every single one.

Image
michiganrag

There is a global setting to disable tracking for all apps :)

Image
joelex8472

100% yes I will!

Image
nasht00

In my Privacy settings, “Allow Apps to request to track” was off by default.

Image
huyibing911

Only 2/3?

Image
RamsesThePigeon

“Two thirds” does not need a hyphen in that context, MacRumors.

Image
sheevbuscemi

That actually makes a lot of sense! I’ve never had it explained to me like that, I have a big technical report due next week and this will help a lot.

Image
ctyldsley

People have a major lack of understanding of the reality of how this will impact people, caused mostly by the fear/hate mongering built by the media to garner clicks. A media which thrives on clicks for ad revenue. An ad revenue which has declined significantly alongside the rise of social media ads (and other factors).

Image
shoebee2

If that is how the data is used then it shouldn’t be a significant loss. Can you offer a better start to solving the problem of harvesting user data? Or do you not think it is a problem?

Image
guitarock

I never see ads and I'm glad I don't, I don't need people to tell me what I want to buy, I don't like consumerism.

Image
hdjdurbdbd

DUH BUT APPLE OVERPRICED BAD RITE REDIT MOMENT?

Image
Fireman2085

Ooooh thanks for reminding me! ADS BLOCKED!

Image
SlimSandy

You’ll still get ads, just less relevant ones.

Image
squidmanwillie

Til: one third of iPhone users are dangerous psychopaths

Image
OpticEye0

Til: I am a dangerous psychopath

Image
_Administrator_

Won’t do it. It’s not bothering me and content providers gotta earn money somehow.

Image
JoeCasella

Is Apple's end game to greatly reduce "free" apps with advertising. Make apps cost more money. Basically diverting dollars from advertisers into its pocket.

Image
rvncto

Nothing wrong with that if it gets rid of all the shit apps.

Image
nemogirl

I might be completely wrong, but I thought this just blocked personalised/targeted ads and not ads altogether.

Image
Deranged_Kitsune

The other third just does not know it's an option yet?

Image
CdM-Lover

2/3rds plus one. I’m in 100%. This is what I want from Apple. Can they fix FB too.

Image
OnionFily

We're about to enter late 90s ad era. Gonna be wild.

Image
AgitatedT

I’ll be opting out 100%...only way I’d consider otherwise is if these dirty ad companies generating revenue off “my back” and my data would be for them to share the money they make off me in a VERY MEANINGFUL WAY IE 50% AT LEAST

Image
Stadi60

Time for a flip phone.

Image
Error_Empty

Lmao yea right. It's apple, they're gonna do whatever makes them the most money.

Image
guswang

I would block it on day one. absolutely no one cares about targeted ads. No one opens instagram expecting to see ads. When I open the app, I want to see what people are posting, and I don't care if an ad is showing something I have interest or not. If I want to buy something, I open my shopping apps.

Image
DadOfFan

For me an apple hater. I am now considering an apple iphone.

Image
Mr_Zombay

Welcome to the free world iOS users

Image
NPCtom

As a business owner who relies on Facebook ads for majority of my revenue stream this is a huge loss.

Image
GTMoraes

Question: Does people know what and how Facebook and Google tracks you, and what they do with tracking information?

Image
mikepictor

I'd rather pay a fair monthly fee. If I could be sure that FB, in exchange for 4.99 a month or something, was not tracking me, was not reselling my info, was not compiling metrics on me, ... was just giving me a platform to talk to friends, I might well pay up for that.

Image
monkeypowah

Apple still has the info..they dont sell it directly, but advertisers pay to make use of what Apple know about you.

Image
impulse_thoughts

This is a useless “make me feel better but doesn’t actually do anything” equivalent of the TSA security theater. Setting the option “allow apps to request to track me” to “off” still allows “apps that don’t ask may still try to track your activity”.

Image
hasdunk

If that's the case, then why should Facebook went up and arm about it? Apple already announced that in order for apps to stay in the app store they need to comply with the new policy and update their apps. If not, it'll get kicked out.

Image
Evostance

Love how nobody is talking about Apples own ad services they're developing which likely won't be covered under this ad tracking. I'll be surprised if there's not some sort of class action on Apple about this for stopped small businesses advertising and monopolising advertising on their own platform

Image
hattornado

Doubt that would happen as google would end up in the court case too.

Image
Vigorously_Swish

Apple on the frontlines, fuck yeah! GOOD LUCK ever getting this shit on an Android lol

Image

You can’t block Facebook from tracking your likes and what you look at though.

Image
The_Blue_Adept

You can if you deleted your account 6 months ago because you're done with all the nonsense.

Image

Guess I'm leaving Android

Image

Only 2/3?

Image
lili1948

I have a PC, an iPhone and an iPad. When this is a done deal, I’ll replace my PC by a MAC.

Image
notanotherbreach

This is about ad tracking, not blocking ads. Which I am sure they will work around it either with Apple or file lawsuits/lobbying to get your info.

Image
Lolwutgeneration

For the first time I am honestly considering switching from Android to iOS. I already use an iPhone as a work phone and this has me even closer to the edge for my personal device.

Is that the actual alert that pops up or just a render? “Ask top to track” seems like bad wording
