Omg, you have a natural gift! Watch some watercolor youtube videos. They can help with learning some techniques that are specific to watercolor.
If you get a white pen, you could add little touches of white in the eyes and hair that would give a more textured look
Just what I was going to say. I think OP did a great job capturing her (own) spirit and to me that's the main part of a painting -- this exudes character... I love it!
Yeah, I kinda started the portrait before thinking about the fact I’d have to paint my crazy hair! I think if I tried again I’d try to do something more realistic and definitely highlight or use masking fluid. Cheers!
Eyes yes. But hair i love it as is.
So great. Keep up the good work. There are tons of interesting videos on YouTube, but please lean into your own natural style. You really have a great eye/approach..
Cheers! I’ve not ventured into the world of YouTube tutorials yet... but yeah... for portraits it might be an idea
It's really hard to show dimension with watercolor like you did with the hair, and the shading is very logical. It looks like you're outside on a sunny day.
I was! Sat on my back doorstep squinting a bit into the sun. I’m pleased I captured a bit of that.
This is great, well done! I have no tips, you are way beyond my abilities haha
Ah, thank you so much. Just keep going! I started in jan and can already see massive progress.
This is so expressive, and the contrast in color intensity and value is really nice. A fun thing moving forward could be to play around with color theory?
Hey! I’ve not heard of colour theory. I shall definitely be checking it out. Thank you!
The curly hair looks especially great!
Cheers! I actually kinda smashed that out at the end without too much thought. Didn’t think ahead about painting hair! It’s the main thing I want to practice for my second self portrait. And there’s loads I would do differently next time!
Well done! You did great with facial proportions - lots of people struggle with that when beginning. I would suggest using a bit more color (like cool colors) for the shadows, which will make it really pop.
Thanks for the tips! I was thinking more colour in the flesh might be a way to go. It feels so extreme when adding shadows I got fearful of going too bold!
For most eyes in a neutral position, the entire circle of the iris is not fully visible and is covered by the eyelid like on the house-left eye.
Thank you. I really appreciate the constructive criticism. I’m not very happy with a lot of aspects of the eyes- the points you made being some of them. I need to practice! Maybe some eye studies. This painting definitely highlighted areas of my painting to improve for me! Which was the idea of pushing myself into unfamiliar territory I guess.
I just love watercolor and this is a beautiful self portrait. I especially love the way you painted your hair, and your ability to detail the separation, curl and body of the hair.
Keep painting! You’ve got a gift.
That’s so nice. Thank you.
Do more. I’m hopeless at suggestions as to how you improve, but I really like your first ‘person’.
You have that natural gift that I just don’t have
It's very beautiful. Keep it up and refine your skills, you have a great style, with tons of unique potential that I definitely want to see more of. ^
Natural born artist! That looks great.
Wow, very clean brush strokes. Makes me very envious of your skill!
Looks great, keep it up
Wow I love it! Gorgeous and has a lot of personality!
that's wonderful I love it, but there's still lack in the eye
Yeah. I definitely need to have another go at eyes! You don’t realise how complex they are until you actually try and paint one eh?! Cheers!
You are looking well Ms. Frizzle!
I had to google who this is because I’d never heard of her (I’m in the UK), and this made me laugh!
I love it!
i like the hair a lot! i've tried doing self portraits and when it got to my hair (quite a curly afro-like mess) i haven't been able to get as good looking. this inspires me to try again haha 😊 ❣️
For your first you definitely did better than my attempt! Good job and keep at it, learning through experimenting is probably the best way to learn.
Thank you! Yeah, I’m definitely gonna have a go at some more figurative stuff. Brand new area for me so it’s exciting! I’m keen to hone my skills, but also develop my style!
That looks amazing. :o
I am very new at painting so I do not have any suggestions. Just wanted to say that I love it!
Thank you! It’s exciting starting out eh? I’m amazed how hard I fell for watercolours when I started. And honestly, if you paint frequently (I get a bit in most days), and push yourself out of your comfort zone on occasion, you will progress in your skill quickly! Trust me, I started out making abstract looking clouds in January and am really happy with what I’ve figured out since. Keep painting!!
Great job, i want to do portraits, but i am too chicken shit to try.
Cheers. Just give it a go Satan. I found it really exciting to do something I never normally do. Nice challenge ya know? Plus, if it’s pure dogshit you never have to show anyone eh?
I had Miss Frizzle vibes and I love it! The hair has lots of movement to it and is really fun to look at.
That's really good for someone who has never painted before👍👍👍
Oh no, don’t get me wrong, I started painting in January, but this is my first attempt at a person! I don’t normally do realistic looking stuff- more stylised.
Is simply fantastic. I'm tellin you if I could paint a portrait half as well as you I would be thrilled. It's just so cute. The HAIR? How did you learn to do hair? I just love it all. But the best is the glasses and how you made them show a slight reflection. Some bits of white here and there will highlight the eyes and maybe teensy weensy in your hair. I think its glorious for a first time portrait. Thanks for sharing with us. But your username is something I would pick. Lol
Thank you so much! It made me smile to read your kind words. I am yet to attempt a second version as a traumatic event has currently knocked all creative drive out of me. I know it will return, and when it does I’ll continue my painting journey I’m sure. Thanks again for your lovely comment!
Yep, it’s a pretty accurate painting, if I do say so myself.
