If Democrats want any chance at getting the majority in the General Assembly, this is their best shot.
Agreed. I don’t know why they remain so quiet on the issue.
“You’ll see folks that will go to Virginia. And, why should they get all those tax benefits and leave our state when we could get those tax benefits right here?”
I know I would. My in-laws live in the mountains of VA and there are some beautiful spots I wouldn’t mind smoking at. My FIL says first thing he’s going to do when he retires is toke up.
Weed is decriminalized in NC it's like a speeding ticket
The state would get more if they legalized, regulated, and taxed it.
And here come the traffic stops just past the border ..
There's going to be a lot of "I searched his car because I smelled weed" tickets being issued.
“There’s always the debate about it’s a non-addictive drug and all that. I take the opposite approach. It’s a gateway drug, and I’m not supporting marijuana in any way, shape, manner, or form,” he said.
This is well said and I don’t understand why this point often gets misunderstood. It was a gateway drug for me because when I (a very cautious high schooler, “afraid to mess with my brain chemistry”) finally took a hit on a bowl and did not hallucinate a full blown trip, I got curious. And honestly felt a bit let down by what I had anticipated as a Rubicon-crossing that turned out to be...me raiding my friend’s stale old Halloween candy while declaring that I wasn’t even high.
Tobacco is more of a gateway drug than cannabis.
So long Carolina Beach vacation Hello Virginia Beach vacation!!
Eeww. Don’t do VB. It was crowded when i was going there over 30 years ago. Now its shoulder to shoulder. Check out Sandbridge. Its just a bit south of VB and is more like Kure/Carolina beach.
I've never tried weed but I don't care if other people do. Legalize it and tax it!
We can't even buy liquor at a Costco and we're going to legalize Marijuana? I'm not going to hold my breath, but it would be a pleasant surprise if we actually got some movement on this issue.
Might be a while, we have a lot of “do as I say, not as I do” state politicians here in NC.
Especially when they are still throwing around dated lines like "it's a gateway drug..."
I just wanna see the video of Madison Cawthorne beating up a huge weed plant
Omg please before I die.
Ah the old gateway drug argument, and the let me see the science on its benefits and the data, all of which are readily available and disproven. SMH. Well get there eventually, if inch by painstaking inch, we are for sure nationally in the minority on this.
It's a PDF link, but this article has all you need to know about that argument (it has thorough citations):
This shouldnt even be an issue. NC is so stupid they are behind fucking ALABAMA on marijuana
Could we see about tamping down the knee jerk attempts to cast Alabama's name in poor lighting? Alabama is not all bad. It is good too. Respect.
Awesome news, I’m not too far from the Virginia border so at least I will be able to take a day trip across the border from my limited freedom area to a free state.
Yeah and since cbd hemp bud is legal here you can drive easy. Looks the same.
North Carolina is always late to these things. Cautious. The revolution. The civil war. We were like the 44th state to get a lottery. There are still weird alcohol laws.
It's amazing how far behind the rest of the country NC is. The fact that these republicans lawmakers need to see research is crazy. Pretty sure a quick google search would show many science backed studies supporting weed for medical use. Meanwhile, for recreational everyone will just drive to Virginia and give them buckets of tax dollars.
Birthplace of freedom my ass lol
Sure would be nice to not feel like a criminal over something so trivial.
Way past time to legalize it. Come on North Carolina. Let’s join Virginia, they obviously made the right decision.
The crypt keepers in the NCGA are still alive. Need I say more?
If West “By, God” makes The Devil’s Lettuce legal before the home of NASCAR, that would be a damn shame.
With Virginia about to be legalized it’s going to get harder to enforce. Now if/when South Carolina legalized it. Then it will be game over they will not be able to enforce it. As all citizens can go out of state to get it.
I refuse to believe that SC will legalize before we do.
Too many old angry white guys from the good ol' boys club that will shoot that down. When they say the south is slow, it's pretty damn true in every regard.
Technically, Virginia is part of the south.
That would be dope.
Please!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love roads without pot holes. Lets do it. Tax it and fix our shit
will literally never happen. NC wont be legal till full federal legalization. bank it.
Even then the state law is allowed to be more restrictive.
please god if your real
Sure, Jan lollllll. Believe it when I see it since our GA is crazy.
What has been the age restriction in legal states? 18 or 21?
21 I think
It’s going to happen, it’s just a matter of when. Vote your values, not just your party. If youre against it, sorry- but I bet you have friends that smoke up all the time and they don’t tell you because it doesn’t matter and it doesn’t effect you at all, and they respect you.
I’m hoping for more arguments about the societal benefits of legalization rather than the revenues of legalization.
Drastically cutting the number of nonviolent plant enthusiasts in jails, prisons, court rooms and cop cars, for one.
Let’s hope so, Im tired of having to drive to DC.
Is it safer to drive there and drive back or just drive there and mail it back?
Good luck. All the old racist white folks love drunk driving and hillbilly heroin way more than weed.
Believe it or not a lot of them are huge pot heads.
I want this to happen so bad. Fuck the Republicans in charge.
I literally just moved from VA here with my bf and we couldn’t believe the minute we left VA they legalized, really hoping NC does too soon but I know nothing of NC politics other than it’s a red state lol
You really don't know about NC politics then. We are solid purple.
I did the exact same thing.
Time to pass a law to legalize Marijuana with like 50 other laws hidden inside it
Good luck, this state is one of the most heavily gerrymandered in the country.
I want to move back to my rural childhood home, get some of my grandpa's land he's already offered to us. Build a super eco sustainable home and grow weed. Please let me live this fantasy.
And how about on the 20th?
