Except they are not mutually exclusive - both can be true. Don't even try telling me that you don't miss rejoiners and the HNO.
Definitely. I also miss not having Wittyngham and Jessica. Don't get me wrong, I do think they're doing a good job, but they take up so much air time. They talk more than Billy and Chris do. And poor Billy has been reduced to a caricature of himself because he only gets to talk now when he's doing some kind of bit.
So you think someone can think the show is boring right now and also think ESPN was holding them back when the show wasn’t boring. That makes zero sense.
This subreddit assumed that ESPN was only preventing fun from happening. People assumed Dan's ideal version of the show would be similar to pardon my take or the pat McAfee show. People forgot Dan loves to talk about social issues.
I think more of the general rumblings of dislike come from Dan being very, very poor at discussing social issues. Since leaving ESPN the only change is the frequency, not the depth, of these discussion. When ESPN was seemingly reining in Dan, the assumption was there was more he could bring to the segments. But he cant. Its a whirlpool of 'Black bodies stacked on the steps! AFTER THAT SUMMER! Broken bodies on the pile of TV money! IM THE SON OF EXILES!' just circling round and round, steamrolling over any other contribution from Stu/the SC, never arriving at anywhere.
And here I am, just begging for more of Dan's social commentary... It's the main reason I listen.
This was kind of the startling revelation to me pretty early on with the pirate ship. That the things I thought were holding the show back, were not all, but some, actually keeping it together.
I thought the Freedumb marathon had the "old show" feel b/c everyone was together in the studio
Dan needs to have something to fight against. Ultimately, he got what he wanted, but the product is best when he’s backed into a corner.
Sadly we won’t get that back. He can’t and won’t fight against Skip. Plus he’s co-owner of Meadowlark. So sadly we won’t ever get this back.
I don't see how this is at all true, Dan and Stu were pretty good well before they had to worry about what the ESPN babysitter thought about the content they were putting out. That's when I got into the show. I think they are still in the middle of finding their new legs and still recovering from how distorted things have been over the last year.
What I miss about them on ESPN isn’t necessarily tied to just ESPN, but rather everything that went with being a live radio show with hard stops, breaks, and yes a little bit of ol’ norby’s suggested news of the day.
Cmon pirates! Let’s get back to what we’re good at and should be doing on the reg…Talking shit about Cowherd!
While I agree with the sentiment if you're going to tell us it's a buffet and then shove long interviews in our face. I don't mind it if it's just until they get their footing without the espn infrastructure of people working on the show.
Part of the fun of the show on espn was big bad Dan going against the company. The frequent commercial breaks were insufferable but the show had “structure”.
I think they need to give Stugotz his"and" and make him an equal partner in the show again. People thinking they need to be pushing against something are probably not fans of the show pre-ESPN. They didn't need an antagonist to get to the mountaintop, I don't see why they need one to sail the high seas.
Aesop's Fables The origins, Dan, of this saying is Aesop's Fables, the world's best known collection of morality tales. Have you ever made a wish and got what you wanted, only for the reality to fall way short of the expectation?
Yeah. I agree. I’m not listening like I was before. It feels like they’re getting shit together and I miss hearing the marching band to nowhere going you know, Nowhere.
I simply ask that they please move the interviews to LAF and Southbeach Sessions.
Or the next episode of Art of Conversation
Lol Dan already told all of us to fuck off despite it being universally hated. Amazing how he complained about having to do car wash interviews at ESPN but now that’s all he does.
Why would they do that? Dan loves talking to people he likes and respects, not just coaches and athletes who give boring cliches. The long form format is literally why podcasts are superior to radio. It's the best part of the switch imo. Get to have real conversations with people.
Yeah I find myself skipping more episodes than usual now.
I think the show just needs football right now, basketball is kinda meh with all the injuries, the show except Billy hates baseball, hocky is s blowout because the lightning cheated. So since the show won't talk baseball they're gonna talk social issues and politics instead but once football comes back im sure they will have fun guest, betting talk and something to talk about weekly
Very true, but there was a time when the local hours during the summer were some of my favorites. They had no sports to talk about and instead did really good show bits and leaned on the Stugotz character and Greg Cote more.
Idk how anyone can argue the show has been better since leaving espn. Maybe not way worse. But in no way is it better whatsoever. It’s depressing as hell and boring. The guests are a joke.
Too many guests as well. There’s a guest like every hour of the show. Doesn’t really leave space for the show to do “show”
Honestly I’ve been pretty fatigued by the sub recently. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the content post-departure, and even stuff I may not be huge on I’m sure other people are. Lots of people have said they’ve tuned into Simmons more recently, but I’ve gone the other way and find myself less and less entertained by his pods and scooping up more Mystery Crate or SBS or even Cinephile in its place. Hope they keep it up!
i honestly don't know what sub doesn't seem to hate the subject it's made for.
Same! I recently got addicted to Cinephone after watching their Free Dumb segment. And I’ve generally loved the fact that I never know what’s going to happen each main show day since there’s no constraint to “stick to sports,” even though there’s usually at least one sports-focused hour per show day.
This is where I’m at. I’ve been kicking around just unsubscribing. I get having complaints but it was like 6 posts a day. Get over yourselves.
A lot of people think more freedom = better (whatever--creativity, product, content, etc.). The truth is that creativity often benefits from confines and having something to push against. It benefits from having to struggle.
It’s sad the show has really lost what was great about it.
I'm not sure they were trying to make it better...I think they were just trying to make something that was more of their own thing.
What are we getting that’s better? A chili pepper? Less live reads but Dan live read promoting wrestling?
Depends on your perspective. You get more nuanced and free talk about social-political issues. The show hasn’t been quite as whacky as it used to be but I think them getting back in studio will help. I miss the hijinks too but the show is still the best around even being more serious than we are accustomed to
Funny how a day after this thread DLS puts out one of there best shows in 2021. Hour 2 with an amazing Kelce interview and an amazing spirited conversation between Renee and Amin and Dan stepped back and gave them the entire floor to run with
Huh. I didn't notice the that much negativity. I like hearing from almost all the new people. I guess Dan talking about the behind the scene shit? That is the only thing that I glaze over.
I didn’t notice too much of a difference but now I’m sure I’ll nitpick after reading this thread
Unhappy people are never happy
100% agree. I have zero problems with the show post pandemic and I find myself enjoying it more and more. This sub is insufferable.
I like the show better now and listen to it more often. To each their own. 🤷♂️
I think what most people here are missing is this is the jumping off point for what hopes to be a major media company.
What do they not do? I miss Cotes clock but other than that it seems in tact.
At least that shit was on everyday 🤷🏻♀️
Give them a break. Working 14 hours a week is not as easy as they make it seem.
As long as I’ve been listening to this show, there have been so many different versions and the guys always rose to the occasion. Just because it’s something you’re not used to doesn’t mean it’s bad. I think it’s been great and the rest they will figure out.
Agreed, I never did get why some people just get so upset by Dan. I've stuck around since the local days and have always just enjoyed the show for what it is. I like the family feel its always had and them working things out and figuring out the show when things shift. Funny enough I first came across their show by accident when it was local when I was visiting south Florida for a vacation/long road trip (from west virginia) and caught their radio show. Have enjoyed the journey across all forms of the show.
Right? It's like they listened for years without ever actually getting to know who the man was.
Jessica is a definite upgrade 😉
To the folks Stop listening if you don’t like it. Simple as that. Stop complaining the alternative could have been they all go their separate ways and no more show.
I miss the rejoins most I think. But appearances from Mina Pablo Dominique Sara Bo and Tom always made for great listens.
This sub has been taken over by a lot of slightly racists in the daily thread who actually believe what Rachel said about Maria wasn't racist. Luckily a majority of fans aren't like that. Great to see Jamele and Dan's discussion on race getting near 100 000 views on youtube, even though the channel is only a few weeks old.
Jamele, Dan, and Amin at no point made any suggestion that what Rachel said was racist.
You're part of the problem
Silent majority doesn’t want this garbage race bait shit. Been listening for 8-9 years this shit unbearable lately.
